Overview of the program

Medical laboratory technology is one of the most rapidly expanding health care fields. As a medical laboratory technician, you will play an increasingly important role in healthcare delivery. The MLT Program provides extensive training, including a clinical internship with supervised work experience. This qualifies graduates to run clinical tests required by physicians to make life-affecting decisions in patient care.

The health care industry is in the midst of one of the most significant shortages of trained personnel in its history, and leaders predict this trend will continue. The shortage of laboratory personnel is expected to remain high because in the near future many of the current practitioners will be entering retirement years, and not enough programs exist to meet the needs of the industry.

Our graduates will be very successful to the market labor as a medical laboratory scientist (MLS), clinical laboratory scientist or medical laboratory technologist, a healthcare professional whose duties will be to perform chemical, hematological, immunologic, histopathological, cytopathological, microscopic, and bacteriological diagnostic analyses on body fluids such as blood, urine, sputum, stool, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), peritoneal fluid,pericardial fluid, and synovial fluid, as well as other specimens. Medical laboratory scientists work in clinical laboratories at hospitals, physician's offices, reference labs, biotechnology labs and non-clinical industrial labs.

The Vision of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology

We shall train students to become highly qualified Medical Laboratory Technologists who will be able to:

  • Perform tests with a high level of reliability.
  • Ensure adherence to quality control systems.
  • Ensure Total Quality Management.
  • Develop skills that will ensure proper supervision of subordinate staff and effective communication with colleagues, patients and the general public and, Apply knowledge and skills with minimum supervision.


We provide excellent training to students to enable them to become Medical Laboratory Technologists who are able to:

  • Perform basic clinical laboratory investigations.
  • Communicate results and manage resources under minimum supervision.
  • Apply principles of safety in the work environment.
  • pply basic principles in learning new techniques and,
  • Build up their capacity for any prospective national or international certification programmes.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, a Bachelor’s Degree with Honors (four years) and an Advanced Diploma (three years or one for bridging program) will be awarded.

Exit profile.

Graduate from this program will be able to explain biomedical principles and perform various tests, techniques, and procedures in medical laboratories of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th levels located in health centers, district hospitals, referral hospitals, and National Referral laboratory respectively. These tests include Parasitology, Hematology, Microbiology, Immuno-serology, Biochemistry, Molecular biology tests among others. Moreover, they will be able to perform Quality assurance and control, Biosafety, and waste management operations.

Career opportunities

The broad training in many specialties results in very good employment opportunities at the national and international level. Generally, about half of medical laboratory technicians work in hospitals, while the rest work in specialized medical or diagnostic laboratories; in physician and dentist offices; and in provinces or federal agencies. Here in Rwanda, different kinds job opportunities are available in hospitals, health centers, medical teaching institutions, research centres, clinics, private laboratories, and biotechnology research laboratories.

Graduates from this MLT program are able the join any of the following postgraduate courses (MSc Medical microbiology, molecular biology, histocytotechnology, clinical biochemistry, hematology and blood transfusion, and any other specialties related to medical laboratory Sciences.
